Unibind Spine Covers by Peleman are versatile thermal binding spines for flexible, custom document presentations. Unlike Crystal Flex Covers, these spines do not include attached clear or matte covers. Use your own front and back covers, Unibind CoverSets, printed title sheets, specialty paper, or bind without covers.
Formerly called SteelBack, Unibind Spine Covers use a steel spine with SteelResin™ thermal binding adhesive to create a clean, professional bind. Each spine includes a tear-away paper guide for easier loading on compatible Unibind thermal binding machines. Newer spine covers also support crimping for a tighter, more polished finished book.
Quick Highlights
- Use Your Own Covers: Add custom front and back covers, branded title sheets, specialty paper, clear covers, or bind without covers.
- Steel Spine Construction: The integrated metal spine creates a clean, durable edge for professional bound documents.
- SteelResin™ Adhesive: Thermal resin bonds the pages securely along the document edge without punching holes.
- Crimp-Ready Design: Crimping tightens the spine and helps seat the pages more deeply into the adhesive.
- Editable Bind: Small page changes can sometimes be made by reheating the same bound document.
- Flexible Format Options: Available for letter portrait, 11" x 17" landscape, and select letter landscape or top-bound applications.
- Unibind Compatible: Designed for compatible Unibind and Peleman thermal binding systems.
- Professional Finish: A cleaner and more permanent alternative to stapling, comb binding, or loose report covers.
Unibind Spine Size & Sheet Capacity
Choose the spine size based on your sheet count and paper type. Standard 20 lb. paper allows a higher sheet count, while thicker 32 lb. presentation paper reduces the number of sheets that will fit.
Capacities are general estimates. Include the thickness of any covers, inserts, dividers, or specialty sheets when selecting a spine.
| Spine Size | 20 lb. Paper | 32 lb. Paper | Box Qty. |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 / 03 mm | 20 sheets | 15 sheets | 100 pcs |
| 40 / 05 mm | 40 sheets | 30 sheets | 100 pcs |
| 60 / 07 mm | 60 sheets | 40 sheets | 100 pcs |
| 80 / 09 mm | 80 sheets | 65 sheets | 80 pcs |
| 120 / 15 mm | 120 sheets | 90 sheets | 60 pcs |
| 220 / 24 mm | 220 sheets | 145 sheets | 48 pcs |
| 340 / 36 mm | 340 sheets | 230 sheets | 24 pcs |
Using heavier paper, tabs, dividers, printed covers, laminated sheets, or specialty stock? Choose the next larger spine when the document is close to the maximum capacity.
Also available in an 8" spine format for letter landscape and top-bound documents.
Spine Cover Options & Binding Features
Cover-Only Spine
These are thermal binding spines only. They do not include attached acetate, clear, or matte covers.
This gives you the flexibility to use custom printed covers, specialty stocks, branded presentation sheets, clear covers, or no covers at all.
Tear-Away Paper Guide
Each spine includes a paper guide that helps keep the pages aligned while the document is being loaded.
After binding and cooling, remove the guide at the perforation to reveal the finished spine.
Crimp-Ready Finish
Crimping compresses the spine after binding and helps seat the pages more deeply into the SteelResin™ adhesive.
This is especially useful for thicker books or projects that need a tighter, more polished finished edge.
How to Use Unibind Spine Covers
Choose the Spine Size
Count the pages, note the paper thickness, and select the appropriate size from the capacity chart.
Prepare the Document
Align the pages neatly and add your own front and back covers when desired.
Insert the Pages
Place the document stack into the spine and center the pages against the thermal binding adhesive.
Bind the Spine
Place the assembled document into a compatible Unibind thermal binding machine and complete the binding cycle.
Cool and Remove the Guide
Allow the document to cool completely, then remove the tear-away paper guide at the perforation.
Crimp When Needed
Crimp the spine when a tighter finish is desired, especially for thicker documents.
Format Options
Letter Portrait Documents
Use standard 11" spine covers for letter-size portrait documents bound along the 11" edge.
11" x 17" Landscape Books
Standard 11" spine covers can also be used for 11" x 17" landscape books bound along the 11" edge.
Letter Landscape and Top-Bound Documents
For letter landscape documents bound along the short edge, use the 8" spine format.
Compatible Unibind Machines
Choose the Unibind machine that best matches your production volume and preferred crimping method.
For best results, insert the pages evenly, complete the heating cycle, allow the document to cool, and crimp when a tighter finished bind is desired.
Best Uses for Unibind Spine Covers
Custom Presentations
Client proposals, branded reports, real estate books, sales presentations, and customer-facing packets.
Training and Reference Books
Manuals, policy books, employee handbooks, instruction guides, and internal reference materials.
Flexible Cover Projects
Projects that use custom printed covers, specialty paper, clear sheets, branded title pages, or no covers.
Spine Covers are a strong choice when you want the security of Unibind thermal binding with more cover flexibility than a pre-attached cover set.
More About Unibind Spine Covers
Unibind Spine Covers are designed for professional thermal binding systems that create finished books without punching holes through the pages. The steel spine holds the pages in position while the SteelResin™ adhesive bonds the document edge.
Because the spine does not include attached covers, you have more control over the finished presentation. Use custom printed covers, heavy paper covers, branded title sheets, clear covers, or other presentation materials that match the project.
These spines are a practical choice for offices, print shops, schools, training departments, real estate teams, and businesses that produce custom bound documents in-house.
Manufactured by Peleman Industries
Peleman Industries has specialized in professional document presentation since 1939. Unibind systems and spine covers are engineered for reliable thermal binding, polished presentation quality, and repeatable in-house production.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Crystal Flex Covers and Spine Covers?
Crystal Flex Covers include attached clear and matte covers. Spine Covers are thermal binding spines only, allowing you to add your own front and back covers or bind without covers.
Are Unibind Spine Covers reusable?
No. Spine Covers are not intended for reuse on a new project. However, the same bound document can sometimes be reheated to adjust, remove, or replace a small number of sheets.
Do I need to crimp the spine?
Crimping is optional but recommended for thicker books or when you want a tighter finished bind. It compresses the spine and helps seat the pages more deeply into the adhesive.
How do I choose the right spine size?
Count the sheets, include any covers or inserts, and use the capacity chart for your paper weight. Choose the next larger spine if the document is close to the stated limit.
Can I bind 11" x 17" landscape documents?
Yes. Standard 11" spines can be used for 11" x 17" landscape books bound along the 11" edge.
Can I bind letter landscape or top-bound documents?
Yes. Use the 8" spine format for letter landscape and top-bound documents.
Can I use my own front and back covers?
Yes. You can use printed covers, specialty paper, clear sheets, branded covers, or no covers depending on the project.
What machines work with these spines?
Spine Covers work with compatible Unibind and Peleman thermal binding machines, including the UniBinder 60, UniBinder 120, UniBinder 8.1, and UniBinder 8.2.

Easy to use
The Unibind system is very easy to use. I like the fact that our agents can do it themselves by dropping the listing presentation on the system, and in a few minutes, go out on a call. It's just so easy and simple!
